By having a supply of essential alcohol mixers on hand, you’re ready to whip up the drink of choice for almost any guest that pops by.

But what are the essentials when it comes to alcohol mixers? And what do you make with them? To the experienced home bartender, the answers might seem obvious, but if you’re just setting up your home bar or perhaps preparing to host a party for the first time, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer mass of mixers, juices and syrups out there.

Knowing which mixers are the true essentials helps you keep your beverage bar prepared, manageable and crowd-pleasing – and we’re here to help to pick the best ones.

Tips for buying alcohol mixers

  • Buy single-serve cans or bottles that not only have a long expiration date but are recyclable and help reduce waste.
  • Be aware of the sugar content! Some mixers are very sweet and have the power to ruin a lovely drink, so make sure you check the sugar content before you buy.
  • Alcohol isn’t for everyone, so buy quality mixers that taste great on their own with lots of ice!
  • Remember, versatility is key, so if you only have room for a few mixers, stick to the ones that work with a range of drinks, such as soda water.
  • When it comes to juice mixers, freshness makes a big difference to flavour!

Alcohol Mixers: 7 Essentials For Your Home Bar

Shopping lists at the ready! We’ve put the most popular alcohol mixers in one spot for you. And to help take the guesswork out of how to use them, we’ve also given you a list of some of the most loved drinks that use these particular mixers. You’re welcome.

Tonic Water

A true staple and oh-so-versatile, tonic water is just as wonderful on its own with ice as it is in a mixed drink. Switch it out for soda water for something a little less bitter.

  • So easy to go too sugary with the mixers. Sugar free options are also great. But I’ve been loving all the flavoured soda waters lately- almost no sugar in them and a nice flavour

  • I love cranberry juice, not only for the test before the colour! I’m off to go and make my Seabreeze right now!

  • Love this! My husband and I have renovated our bungalow in the backyard and turned it into a bar, so it’s great to have an idea of a few different mixers to always keep on hand. What I’d like to know, is what basic utensils should we buy, to be able to make basic cocktails etc for our friends?

  • We keep 8 soda water bottles in our fridge at all times.

  • I often have quite a few of those on hand. It’s also really handy to have a Soda Stream as then you can make up soft drink as needed with minimal fuss. One of my favourite mixers to have is the Golden Circle pineapple coconut juice – it’s perfect for creating a pina colada

  • I’ve come to the point where I agree it’s better to buy individual serves, cans or small bottles. The large bottles seem to go flat in the fridge as we don’t drink often enough.

  • I re read this article last night and it inspired me to make Cosmopolitan (Vodka, Cranberry Juice, Cointreau and Lime Juice). I made a huge jug and poured over crushed ice with fresh mint leaf on top and it was soooooo good! Cranberry juice will now be a shopping list must have!

  • My usual option for a mixer is sugar free lemonade! It can be great for cocktails and mocktails.

  • Great article full of super tips! I like to dust off the soda stream so that I always have bubbles on hand to add to the mix. Also popping small pieces of lime and orange into IceCube trays and topping with filtered water – they make for gorgeous ice cubes bursting with flavour as they melt through your drink.

  • Love all these mixers. I totally agree about the tonic and soda water- so much less sugar that way and go well with different mixers. At least then you can control the amount of sugar and stay a little more hydrated too. I love pink gin with tonic and a splash of lemonade and fresh berries.

  • I keep a variety of Syrups and cordials. Elderflower is my favourite to add to gin. I also make sure I have magaritia, Daiquiri, Mojito Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Mixes from Woolworths. A good way of not adding more calories to a cocktail.

  • A good quality mixer can really take your drink and elevate it to the next level. I always try to have some staples on hand like soda and tonic water that pair effortlessly with spirits. And the dried garnishes that just add that finishing touch to any drink which just makes it visually appealing!

  • Very classic and easy mixers that pair so well with lots of drinks

  • All the classic mixers here! I would always have some soda water, lemonade, coke and ginger beer on hand. I found that could cover most tastes in the family at a get together. I’ll have to make sure I have a little bit of everything from this list for Christmas celebrations this year. The hardest one to find is peach juice for a real Bellini. That is one of my favourite summer time cocktails and just isn’t the same using apricot nectar.
