A great vodka should always be smooth

What people look for in a great vodka

Of course, everyone has their own version of “best” when it comes to food and drinks. That said, great vodka comes with some universal criteria.

Here’s what other sippers look for in a fantastic vodka:

  • Smoothness – Vodka shouldn’t burn, rather it should be smooth with a subtle taste profile.
  • Versatility – From vodka martinis to classic mixed drinks like a Black Russian, vodka is one of the most popular spirits for a wide range of drinks, so it needs to be up to scratch! Look for a classic and smooth vodka that will work well whether your guest requests a Bloody Mary or a shot!
  • Appearance – Yes, people do judge a spirit by its cover – and with bottles like Crystal Head in the mix, who can blame them? If a great-looking bottle matters to you, have a look around before you settle on one – you might be surprised at what you find!

A word on price

Vodka varies widely in price in Australia, starting around $38 for Cleanskin varieties (700ml) to over $100 for brands like Grey Goose (700ml). We recommend finding the right balance of quality and affordability when choosing – and always look around for sales!

  • Sounds like vodka is making a comeback- in my 29’s it was my go to spirit but over time I found other combinations so it might be time for a trip down memory lane

  • Last night I tried Vodi Vodka which is Tasmanian. It was delicious! The bottle and colour is gorgeous too. Well worth giving it a shot if you get the opportunity. Hints of blueberries and vanilla custard – so delicious!

  • Over the years I think I have tried almost every different type of vodka. Never the crystal head vodka though! I think it’s the price that puts me off that!
If I’m going for a premium vodka, you can’t go past Grey Goose. It’s delicious and I’ve been able to drink heaps of it and not feel the side affects the following day. Belvedere is another premium vodka that goes down very well.
If I’m mixing vodka with soft drink or cocktails then I’m not too picky on the brands, I usually go for smirnoff or Absolut, however I’ve been drinking Grainshaker corn vodka lately and that tastes pretty good too. I believe it’s made in Victoria too, although I’m not 100% sure on that.

  • I’ve tried the crystal head vodka. It is indeed beautiful

  • One vodka I have never tried is crystal head vodka. It sounds delicious and I like a vodka that is smooth and tasty. I would be very much interested in trying this, it would be good if they offered this in a variety of sizes. Vodka goes so well in cocktails which is how I tend to drink vodka the most.

  • Vodka is generally my ‘go to’ drink. I generally buy Smirnoff, but that’s only because I don’t know what else to go for. Definitely reading through the comments to get a few recommendations as to what I should buy next.

  • I wish!!! Last time I looked the large crystal head vodka was like $300 and that was a while ago. Bottles are so unique though, love them.

  • My favourite cocktail is a fluffy duck and I use Smirnoff as it’s my favourite. Vodka is such a versatile alcohol and great for so many drinks

  • Vodka was my first alcoholic drink ever and still remains a favourite. I love a great bottle and the Crystal Head doesn’t disappoint. It looks great on display in the cabinet.

  • Stoli vodka is a really nice, smooth Vodka. I also really like Grey Goose and the Vodka -o brand as well, which I think is organic. Crystal head Vodka is good but way too pricey. I Love Vodka, best alcohol that doesn’t have a strong smell or taste so I can taste the mixer.

  • I remember when actor Dan Aykroyd and John Alexander started promoting the skull Crystal Head vodka. I haven’t tried it yet. At the moment we are enjoying Absolut vodka and can recommend it.

  • I always go for Smirnoff as a well known, reliable brand. I don’t drink vodka all that often so can’t really comment on how it compares to others.

  • Wow! That Crystal Head bottle is really amazing. I can see how this is a great selling point as a gift. I’m enjoying learning all sorts of things on Just Sips.

  • I really like 23rd Street distillery Vodka. I’ve tried both the rose and pomegranate flavours, and ohhhh are they something special. I love a good cocktail, and I found that you don’t need a lot of ingredients mixed in with these to have something flavourful.

  • 23rd Street Riverland Rose Vodka – not only does it taste gorgeous, it looks gorgeous. I stumbled across it whist visiting 23rd Street to do a gin sampling session (which was amazing!) and so glad I did. Such a pretty bottle, colour and taste! They also have a Pomegranate vodka which is a vibrant colour and flavour. If you love 23rd street Gin, you will love their vodka!

  • Vodka is perhaps my favourite spirit, certainly in summer. I would have to say Reyka is one of the best I have tried. Reasonable price and very versatile. Straight with ice or as a mixer, very smooth and a bit different without being anything but top quality,
