When it comes to the main event at Christmas, Jason says the golden rule is simple: start with lighter wines and gradually move to richer styles as the meal builds.

Below, Jason has curated his top wine pairing recommendations to complement every dish this Christmas Day.

The perfect wine for glazed Christmas ham

A glazed Christmas ham is sweet, salty and often smoky or honey‑glazed, so choosing a wine that cuts through the richness is key.

Crisp whites or a refreshing rosé work beautifully. A crisp white wine or refreshing rosé balances out the glaze and lifts the palate.

Try the A.C. Byrne & Co Margaret River Chardonnay (750 ml, $10.99) from ALDI for bright citrus and fleshy stone fruit notes, or the La Mule Provence Rosé (750 ml, $13.99) for a delicate, summer-fruity lift. Both bring a touch of vibrancy to the plate without overwhelming the dish.

What to pour with roast turkey and trimmings

Roast turkey, with its savoury stuffing, herbs and gravy, calls for something with a little more presence. This is where fuller-bodied whites or soft, medium reds come into their own.

Build gradually, don’t leap straight to the heaviest wine. A great choice here is  Les Argelières Pinot Noir (750 ml, $11.99) from ALDI, which brings just enough body and elegance to stand up to the meal without overpowering it.

Light, fresh pairings for seafood feasts

Seafood has its own kind of elegance, think chilled prawns, briny oysters and whole roasted fish that taste like summer itself. Here, light and refreshing wines are the best choice. Clean, crisp whites with lively acidity highlight delicate textures and refresh the palate between bites.

Start light with something like ALDI’s Kaiora Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (750 ml, $9.99), which delivers vibrant passionfruit and gooseberry notes.

  • I absolutely love when a meal has each dish paired with a drink, it elevates the entire experience and gives an extra element of care and consideration to the meal and atmosphere. Unfortunately Aldi in QLD doesn’t have this wonderful range. I really hope that’s something that changes in the near future

  • I prefer crisp white wine in summer. This is a great article for anyone who is looking to pair the right wine with the right food as i know wine always tastes so much better when it is paired correctly. For me, I only drink red wine in winter as i find it harder to drink in the summer months.

  • It’s funny because I always seem to lead towards white with Christmas and yet this article makes so much sense! I’m definitely going to do more research into what goes best with what I’m serving from now on! These reds look the perfect picture for Christmas dining and I can’t believe now that I overlooked them before!

  • This is a great article and my biggest take away is to build up to the main meal. I have never tried the Les Argelières Pinot Noir from ALDI and at $11.99 I will be buying a bottle for our Christmas lunch.

  • This is a great guide, thankyou for sharing these tips and ideas. I particularly like the pairings for seafood suggestions. It’s hard for me to know where to start when it comes to pairings, so this is a great starting point.

  • This was a great article! Although i lean towards more of a white wine girly, i do appreciate that sometimes it’s not always the best option when paired with certain foods, such as steak. Having the right drip for the occasion and meal can really elevate it and make it that much better.

  • I love a Moscato to start with with appertisers and cheeses. It’s not too strong but sweet and pairs with many things, in my opinion , anyway lol. I am by no means knowledgable about what goes well with what and usually just go with the wine I like throughout the meal.

  • Great article. I have never purchased alcohol from Aldi before but I’ll definitely consider next time I’m needing to buy. If I’m hosting Christmas at my place, I always make sure I have a bottle of Lambrusco for my parents and mother-in-law. For them, it’s nostalgic and it pairs well with my lamb roast. For me, I quite enjoy rose as it’s lighter in taste but still refreshing. For dessert, Bailey’s liqueur pairs well with fruit cake, custard and trifle.
