Mullet is turning heads in Australia’s wine circles for its bolder tastes and high ABV of up to 17%.

Developed by Fourth Wave Wine and crafted by winemakers Nicholas Crampton and Corey Ryan, Mullet joins a dynamic brand portfolio that includes Elephant In The Room, Tread Softly, Little Giant, The Hero and Farm Hand.

The range uses a combination of South Australian and Victorian grapes to create wines that pack a huge mouthfeel up front with a bigger body and super long finish, just like its hairstyle.

Speaking of hairstyle, ‘Mullet’ is a nod to the resurgence of iconic haircut steeped in Australian culture. The Mullet motto: ’ It’s business in the front, party at the back’.

The range took inspiration from the drinking trends of Gen Z and Millennials, who seek innovative and craft-focused beverages.

Managing Director of Fourth Wave, Ross Marshall explains that “as the wine industry tries to find new ways to attract and recruit modern consumers, you need to think differently and look at how other categories engage them, so we took inspiration from the rise of ‘hardy style’ as a feature in the seltzer and spirits category”.

In describing the range, Marshall adds that “Mullet speaks deliberately non-wine language in tone of voice and look and feel. It is anti-sophisticated, anti-conventional. It is bold, brave, fun, and laden with satirical humour and attitude. Like the hairstyle, Mullet is not for everyone”.

Sips for adventurous palates

The Mullet range includes seven varieties, appealing to every palate and preference. Each is described as bold, flavour-packed and “big on alc”.

Red varieties include Mullet Hard Cab Sav and Mullet Hard Pinot, both with an ABV of 15%. The full-bodied Mullet Hard Shiraz has the highest alcohol content of the range with an ABV of 17%.

Mullet Hard Gris, Mullet Hard Chardy and Mullet Hard Sparkly all have an ABV of 15%, while the slightly lighter Mullet Hard Moscato has an ABV of 13.5%.

Prices for the 750ml bottles range from $13 to $16, with some as low as $12 on sale. This makes them an appealing low-mid-range wine for consumers looking for big flavour and higher alcohol content.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), the average ABV of wine sold in Australia is 12-14%.

“Mullet wines are awesome,” says the brand’s website. “Rock your mullet with pride.”

  • Sounds down to earth and honest. Fun name! I’d definitely give them a try. Although will have to be careful finishing the bottle with a higher alcohol content! Go the Mullet!

  • These wines look fun and inviting for summer and I can’t wait to give one a try and see what it is like. Although i am not a fan of mullets (hair), i am always up for trying a new wine. The labels look so vibrant and colourful. Very eye catching.

  • Gen Z and Millennials don’t get to have all the fun, as a barley boomer I’m up for trying the mullet in all it’s glory!

  • I love it when I brand uses casual language. It’s like they’re speaking directly to their consumer on the label – 12/10 marketing IMO. I can’t wait to try these! I’ll be on the look out at my local bottle-o.

  • Sounds like this is filling a niche in the wine market and I would give the Hard Pinot and Hard Sparkly a try. The bottle prices are reasonable. It will be interesting to see the advertising for this brand – lots of mullets. 😀

  • Love the message and idea behind this brand. The name ‘mullet’ definitely makes it stand out in an already high density market with so many brands. It’s fun, catchy and best of all – affordable that will cater to so many people’s budgets. I’d definitely be keen to try!

  • Low cost, hight ABV – the young one are going to love it. Tempted to give the Gris and the Chardy a whirl. To be honest not a fan of the mullet hair style but may be swayed to be a fan of this mullet.

  • I absolutely love the ethos of this brand, what a fresh take on the industry! And they’re on the money, almost ever teen guy I see lately has a mullet. And the look of the bottles is so rock and roll, a bit edgy. I’d be very keen to give it a try when I see it on the shelves.

  • What a great Aussie name and concept, it is certainly anti-sophisticated, anti-conventional sounding. Marketing is such a big thing and this certainly make me want to give it a go and support Aussie initiative. The price range is appealing too.
