A talented New York-based mixologist is taking inspiration from international cuisine to create savoury cocktails like you’ve never seen (or tasted) before.

Jarbae‘s savoury cocktail recipes are as unique as they are fascinating, and if the classic cocktails you see year after year are getting a wee bit tired, these inventive concoctions are sure to tantalise your tastebuds.

Many of Jarbae’s drinks are a nod to traditional Asian flavours and they really allow the flavours of the hero ingredients to shine. Think earthy sesame seeds, the delicate flavour of persimmons or the boldness of pork-infused tequila. Herbs, fish sauce, ginger – even red curry paste make an appearance here – and trust us, you’ll be hooked the second you start watching.

Each creation is an expert balancing act layered with creative talent. These aren’t just cocktails – they’re art.

Jarbae’s genius doesn’t end with cocktail recipes, either. He’s also full of insanely welcome tips for any avid mixologist. This includes little tricks that will save you money while impressive your guests no end (like making your own garnishes! – thank you, Jarbae!).

An Actual Bowl Of Pho

One of our favourite Jarbae creations is “An Actual Bowl Of Pho.” Just like the famous Vietnamese soup dish, it packs some complex flavours … in a cocktail.

@realjarbae This drink is called “an actual bowl of pho” I had so much fun with this one because my favorite recipes are the ones that leave me so confused, I have to keep tasting to see whether I like it or not. 😭 The flavors in this are so complex (it gives kombucha girl when you try it) but oddly addicting. If you like the warmth of a spiced drink, and the fun of a margarita, you’ll love this one (unless you hate viet people I guess but that’s on you pookie 🇻🇳✊🏼 Recipe: 2 oz pho-spiced tequila (recipe below) 3/4 oz lime juice 1/2 oz ginger simple syrup Dash of saline (or pinch of sea salt lol) Muddled cilantro Slice of Thai chili Pho spiced tequila: infuse tequila with star of anise, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, whole cloves, and coriander seeds. Either 1hour in a sous vide OR in a mason jar in the fridge for 3-5 days. #cocktails #spiceddrinks #asianrecipes #vietfood #asiandrinks ♬ Trendsetter – Connor Price & Haviah Mighty

And that’s just the start …

Some of Jarbae’s other creations include Clarified Mango Sticky Rice, Hong Kong Egg Tart, Pani Puri Shooters and Lemon and Calamansi Cheong to name just a few.

  • As a Vietnamese family I am absolutely going to have to try the ‘actual bowl of Pho’ . It’s kind of messing with my head that the drinks will taste like asian cuisine. They sound great though and Im willing to give them a red hot shot! I think my husband will like them too!

  • Love these cocktails and have introduced my family and friends to now indulge in their amazing flavours. The flavours are definitely well invented and I have never tasted anything quite like them. My original cocktails are now a thing of beauty he past since I’m loving these amazing savoury flavours .

  • I love the creativity of these cocktails.

  • Move over oyster shooters, more foodie cocktail are out! Absolutely love this. The actual bowl of pho looks incredible. I adore a drink that hits the senses, a scent that excites you before you’ve even tasted it. I would be so keen to try this myself, maybe if I’m feeling a little fancy this weekend and raid the herb drawer.

  • I love these cocktails but they seem too complex for the average person to make. The easier the drink the more likely I am to attempt it. I think some of these flavours sound great. I would gladly have a bartender make them for me and give them a try.

  • I don’t know if I could get around some of these dishes as cocktails, unless they were hot, kind of like mulled wine. Otherwise I’d feel like I was eating food that’s gone cold and bad, which is a big red flag for my brain, gut and gag reflex LOL

  • I reckon some of these flavours could really work. Being that they are Asian flavours and you have things like ginger and lime that are already so pleasant to eat, it could be a flavour sensation. I mean, people already love pho, which is practically a drink anyway, so just add the alcohol!

  • I can see super savoury cocktails increasing in popularity on platforms like TikTok. There is one creator I follow that is knows as a savoury girl and makes the wildest cocktails with an assortment of brines from peppers, pickles, from blue cheese, lobster vodka. I am probably not game enough to try anything like them but it’s nice to see new ideas being brought to light!

  • Wow, ive never seen anything like this before! It’s so innovative and clever to come up with something like this. I definitely think there is a big gap in the drink market for something like this that brings something new and exciting to the table. I would love to taste these!

  • Well these certainly are different. I do find some cocktails and mixes do get a bit sickly after a few cos they’re so sweet. Not sure I would enjoy some of these savoury drinks tho

  • Wow the ideas that people come up with are so amazing and creative. I love what people are doing with drinks these days, they look so refreshing and appealing. It is making me want to go home and make one myself. I totally agree with the article, these are not just drinks they are indeed art!

  • Some people are so very creative and just have a knack of getting the flavour mixes right. A chef for drinks and the bar! It must take a lot of taste testing to get it right. Presentation is such a big theing here too and they seem to have hit the mark.
