Hello!

Australian Chardonnay has just pulled off something pretty special, and it happened right on the variety’s home turf.

At the 2026 Chardonnay du Monde in Burgundy, France, South Australian winery Taylors Wines became the only brand in the world to land two wines in the Top 10. Not only that, but Australia was the only Southern Hemisphere country represented at that level.

For a competition that’s one of the most prestigious global benchmarks for Chardonnay, the result is a very big deal.

The two wines that beat the elite

The 2026 Chardonnay du Monde competition saw 471 wines from 25 countries judged blind by international experts. The Top 10 sits above Gold medal level, meaning these wines are considered among the very best in the world.

Taylors’ two standout bottles, Taylors Jaraman Chardonnay 2025 and Taylors Special Release Chardonnay 2024, were ranked alongside elite French benchmarks, including Burgundy Premier Cru and Champagne Grand Cru wines.

Jaraman Chardonnay is the standout bottle, delivering vibrant lime zest, pineapple and nectarine, layered with zesty acidity and a subtle French oak texture. And it comes with a price tag under $30.

That price point makes its Top 10 placement even more impressive, outperforming international wines that often cost significantly more.

“Profound evolution” of Australian Chardonnay

Taylors’ incredible result on the global stage taps into the bigger shift happening with Australian wine right now.

Australian Chardonnay is currently the nation’s biggest-selling white wine over $201, and its style has evolved significantly in recent years. Think less heavy oak and more freshness, versatility and easier food pairing.

“Australian Chardonnay has undergone a profound evolution over the past decade. The shift away from overt richness towards precision, freshness and regional character has completely changed how these wines are perceived internationally. Results like this, judged in Burgundy, again show the quality of Australian Chardonnay among the greatest examples of this variety from around the world. In a rapidly changing wine world, Chardonnay will likely become our nation’s key opportunity to shine on the global stage, evidenced by awards such as this.”
