Thereโ€™s something undeniably comforting about warm cocktails. Whether youโ€™re staying in on a chilly night or having friends over to catch up, these drinks offer a gentle way to enjoy seasonal flavours – no ice required.

Four Pillars, one of Australia’s favourite gin distillers, has created three delicious warm cocktails that fit the bill for winter sipping. Each uses the brand’s cult-status Bloody Shiraz Gin and brings some welcome warmth (literally) to the cooler months.

Theyโ€™re simple to make, full of flavour and just right for those cold nights when you want something cosy, but with a little more character than a cuppa.

With its roots in old English winter celebrations, Wassail is both a flavour-packed sip and a toast to ye olde traditions.

This version blends apple cider with freshly squeezed orange juice, cranberries, cinnamon, vanilla and a pinch of brown sugar with Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin.

Simmered gently, itโ€™s a nice aromatic change to the usual hot drink lineup. Garnish with fresh or dehydrated orange slices and serve in mugs or heat-proof glasses.

Another Bloody Mulled Wine

Mulled wine tends to signal Christmas, but Four Pillars’ Another Bloody Mulled Wine comes with some clever tweaks that make it a year-round go-to.

The first step is perhaps the most creative as it involves piercing fresh oranges with cloves and roasting them until they’re browned and smelling incredible. Next, combine red wine and port with water, brown sugar, ginger, nutmeg and ground allspice in a pot to simmer. And finally, slice the oranges and squeeze all that goodness into the mix.

The result is a slow-sipping drink with familiar spice and strong citrus notes. It’s a great one to scale up for a crowd if you’re after a punch.

Bloody Toddy

A classic Hot Toddy typically calls for a combination of whiskey (often bourbon), water, honey and lemon. But Four Pillars’ Bloody Toddy, as expected, dials up the flavour and the interest.

This version uses Bloody Shiraz Gin mixed with honey, mixed spice and boiling water. But what really sets it apart is the addition of a hibiscus tea bag. Steeped for three minutes, it ignites the flavours and creates a whole new sipping experience.

Great for winding down or warming up, it’s served straight in the mug, with no need to reach for a saucepan.

  • I’m not a fan of warm alcoholic drinks, personally. On a cold wintery night, I’d much prefer to sit around a fire with a cup of tea or hot chocolate.
That being said, I remember my dad saying scotch was the best thing in winter to warm the soul, so I may have to venture out of my comfort zone and give these a try. After all, they do sound delicious!

  • I love this article so much! We are in the process of designing our backyard with a fire pit and seating with the intention to be more social and I can just my fam and friends enjoying some hot cocktails by the fire. I had only heard of muted wine before so it is great to learn about some other options. The Wassail sounds so delish! Giving those Cool Autumn vibes for sure

  • A great article. Very interesting. I’ve never heard of warm cocktails before so this is new to me. They’re a fantastic way to warm the soul in Winter, that’s for sure. The Hot Toddy cocktail is my favourite! Sounds delicious and very soothing. Forget a lemon honey tea…pour me a Bloody Toddy!

  • Love this gin, must try the recipe

  • The Wassail cocktail sounds delicious. I have made lots of traditional Hot Toddys but will have to try a Bloody Toddy with a hibiscus tea bag.

  • I warm cocktail!! They sound amazing. I have never had a warm cocktail before this is new to me but I do love a cold refreshing one thatโ€™s for sure especially in summer. I will have to try a warm one now as the weather is freezing here in Melbourne.

  • I have not tried Four Pillars yet, but the above cocktails sound bloody delicious! I love a mulled wine – they are especially magical here in Tasmania and there are a few venues where you can purchase them during winter. I particularly enjoy the one at the base of one of our mountains where you can sip mulled wine by a fire pit and toast s’mores!

  • These cocktails look amazing. I do like the Bloody Shiraz Gin, so these will be great to try. Sometimes when the weather is cold, I don’t really want a crisp, refreshing drink. Having something a bit different to regular mulled wine sounds good. I like the idea of the roasted orange too.
    Some great weekend inspiration!

  • I love the four pillars bloody Shiraz twist on the classic hot toddy, I think Shiraz gin can sometimes sit on our shelf because we arenโ€™t sure how to drink it or what to do with it so Iโ€™ll definitely have to give some of these warm winter cocktails a try!

  • I’ve made my own versions of mulled wine and now I want to try this version with the orange and cloves. Sounds so good.

  • This is not something I had given much thought to at all. I recently attended a Christmas in July party and we were all given a warm mulled wine on entry. It was so very nice. So this article has got me thinking and I may just try some of the suggestions.

  • A warm cocktail for winter sounds Devine and perfect for this time of year. I have never tried a warm cocktail before but i am eager to try one. A warm mulled wine has been on my list to try for a while but I havenโ€™t yet had the opportunity to try one yet.

  • I have never ever tried a warm cocktail. To be honest, I didn’t even realise they were a thing. Now I know about them, I’ll have to give them a try. Perfect for winter

  • I don’t think a warm cocktail ever crossed my mind. My husband and I do enjoy a relaxing drink at night, once all the house work is done and the kids are in bed. In summer we would turn straight to a refreshing cocktail and cold beer, but lately it just hasn’t been that enjoyable in this freezing cold weather. I will definitely need to buy this four pillars gin to give this a go tonight. Four pillars is out go to gin so I’m hopeful this will be a winner!

  • I have been told the termo mix can make an incredible mulled wine. It certainly weights the thermo mix argument different. I have flicked this article off to a friend and meeting her next week to try the mulled wine recipe. Can you imagine the aroma through the house?! I am looking forward to it.

  • The mulled wine sounds interesting. I have had a few different ones to try over the last few years. My taste for them keeps expanding and growing.
Can’t say I have every had a hot toddy , but hearing the phrase brings back alot of memories from my parents talking about them.

  • Oh wow! Ive heard of a hot toddy before through conversation but have never tried or knew exactly what ingredients went into it. Canโ€™t say Iโ€™ve tried warm alcoholic drinks before but gosh they would be amazing this winter with the cold now. Love Four Pillars, they do amazing alcoholic drinks!

  • I love a hot toddy! The Four Pillars take on it sounds lovely. I’d absolutely be keen to try that. Mulled wine is my husband’s favourite, and I think one of the things he’s looking forward to most on his snow trip next month. He would love Another Bloody Mulled Wine having year round appeal.
