Goon bags just got upgraded! From the popular ‘bagnum’ to single-serve wine pouches, bagged wine is back and shaking up the way Australians enjoy their favourite drinks.

Perfect for everything from pool days to barbecues with friends, wine pouches and their larger-sized bagnums mean the end of heavy bottles, casks and cans and an easier way to enjoy wine indoors and out.

Wine pouches are available in a range of wine varieties, including sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, shiraz and rosé to name a few. But the best bit? They taste just as fab as bottled wine!

Wine pouch vs bagnum vs cask: what’s the difference?

In Australia, bagged wine is available in casks, single-serve wine pouches, 750ml pouches and ultra-large 1.5L bagnums (the bagged magnum!).

What makes wine pouches and bagnums so popular is that they aren’t packaged in a box like traditional ‘goon bags’ are. Designed with features like screw top lids, carry handles and pourers, they’re good-looking, easy to use and ultra-portable. Some even come in recyclable bags, so they’re a tick for the planet too.

With new brands popping up all over the place, it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to bagged wine, so read on for all of our favourites for the summer season and beyond!

  • Super Inspired by this article and went on a special trip to Dan’s to pick up a ‘Bag-num’ of Squealing Pig. It was perfect for the twilight school picnic where glass was not allowed. Easy to pack in the esky and no fear of bottle breaking. Tasted great and one bag-num poured 2 glasses for the 5 of us sharing.

  • HHmmm, I’m not sure about this idea and wonder if it will take off. The article says that SOME are even available in recyclable bags, In this day and age they all should be. I’m keen to see how the prices compare too.

  • I am a little on the fence with these. I love the idea but I do love my wine poured from glass and popping the bottle in the re-cycling. I am unsure if these are single use plastics or recyclable? or made from part recyclable? In any case I will be checking them out to learn more. Thanks for the great article. I love squealing pig and did not realise a ‘bag-num’ was an option 🙂

  • I haven’t tried this brand yet and am curious to try the different varieties of wine. I think the size (one glass) is very convenient as I have had wine go off when the bottle hasn’t been finished within a week.
