Whether you’re dreaming of a chic European-style nook or an ultra-modern retreat, a well-prepared home bar setup is easier to bring to life than you might think.

A home bar isn’t just about bottles on a shelf (or table!) – it’s about creating an inviting space with plenty of personal flair that puts you in complete control of your creations. Fully stocked with your favourite gadgets, tools, sips and garnishes, it’s the answer to hosting on your terms and enjoying great times with your favourite people – all without stepping out!

Ready to get started? Here are eight must-haves for your home bar setup that will have you shaking, stirring, and pouring like a pro in no time.

Spirits

A solid selection of the most commonly used spirits is the first step to getting your home bar setup looking and feeling authentic. Think of the backbones of the most popular cocktails, like whisky, gin and tequila.

Do you need to buy top-shelf spirits? No! Australia has a huge range of affordable spirits that are widely accepted and loved for sipping straight and mixing up. Some people keep a few top-shelf bottles for special occasions and balance them with more affordable spirits.

On a tight budget? Stock a few pre-mixed cocktails instead of pricey spirits.

Beer

From lagers to stouts and IPAs, an interesting selection of beer will ensure you’re ready to cater to every taste. Shops like BWS and Dan Murphy’s sell beer individually, making it easy to store a great variety.

Mixers

Mixers are the answer to fizz, flavour and balance, so ensure you keep a good stock of alcohol mixers in your home bar. These include soft drinks like cola, tonic and ginger ale, plus citrus juices, simple syrup and bitters.

Single-serve cans are super convenient and fit best in bar fridges. Which brings us to the next point…

Bar Cart

If you want your bar to be portable, consider a bar cart to be the perfect solution. These trolleys come in styles from country to ultra-chic and in sizes to suit any entertainer.

Bar fridge

A warm cocktail might be acceptable if it’s intentional, but none of your guests will want to sip warm beer or bubbles!

If you have the space, a bar fridge, regardless of size, is a total gamechanger in a home bar area. It keeps your mixers chilled and saves you from having to run to the kitchen every few minutes for cold drinks, which defeats the purpose of having a home bar!

Cocktail-making tools

A cocktail-making kit is an affordable way to get your hands on all the essential gear without too much fuss. Most quality kits include a shaker, strainer, muddler, spoon and jigger (shot measurer) – but there are more elaborate kits out there with extra additions like stainless steel straws and spoons.

Ice bucket

An ice bucket might seem like a small detail, but trust us, you’ll be thankful you have one. Not only does it give you somewhere to keep your ice while you’re entertaining (handy if there is no freezer in your bar fridge), but it also doubles as a bottle cooler for wine and champagne.

Glassware

The right glass makes all the difference. Must-haves include champagne flutes for celebrations, whisky glasses for sipping, lowball glasses for classic mixed drinks (hello, G&T), martini glasses for cocktails, beer glasses for casual drinks and highball glasses for tall drinks.

Wall shelves

If you have the space to pop up a few shelves, your home bar is going to look that little bit more polished. They’re perfect for spirits and glassware, but best of all, they give your space purpose and make it feel more like a designated zone rather than just a corner of the room.

Coasters and napkins

The smallest touches can be some of the best in your home bar, so invest in some great coasters and stock up on napkins (because paper towels are going to cramp your style!). Small items like these are great for adding a little pop of colour to your home bar setup too.

  • I think a bar cart is more like a piece of art or a modern furniture piece. The way it’s dressed and embellished can enhance a room or atmosphere. I thrifted one a few years back (as well as some beautiful glassware) and it’s a real centre piece for my formal lounge. I don’t have a huge range of liquor on it. Just the staples for me – vodka, bacardi and rum.

  • This is a really great read. I liked all the different ideas and getting inspiration for what I need to add to my collection. I’d love to get myself a bar cart to place all my cocktail making equipment onto. Also spirits, can never have too many bottled spirits in a collection.

  • What a great article. I loved reading this and it is inspiring me to look at my bar set up as it is currently all hiding away in the pantry. I would love a bar cart and bar fridge/wine fridge but these can be costly so it is not something i have yet purchased. It would look so fabulous with some nice bottles of gin and some glasses.

  • I need to lift my entertaining game. I love these tips, covering everything from the basics to the extra details.

  • This is a great list that covers everything! We built our own little purpose built bar that fits into our space. We aren’t into wine or beer so tend to stock all of our favourite spirits. Staples for us are Malibu, Midori, vodka, Kahlua and sometimes Baileys. These are great bases to work with!

  • A fantastic article that has loads of inspiration. I don’t have a bar area in my house but maybe my next house. I do have a bar fridge however. I love the bar cart, it’s super cute and chic! Very versatile. The wall shelves are a great idea maximising space. Love it!

  • Some great tips here! We have a wet bar area in our dining room and I am just dying to add some shelves to it with the hung upside down glassware! I think coasters are a very forgotten bar necessity that a lot go people over look, so I am glad to see them mentioned here.

  • A great read, looks like I have my bar set up right.. I just need a get together now!!
I always like to have lemons or limes handy, beer in the fridge, soda water, a selection of glasses after getting caught without an expresso martini glass when I had an craving for one!

  • I agree, a staple that is needed in a good car set up is good glasses! Having the right glass for the right drink makes a huge difference in my opinion. Also having garnished like dried citrus and flowers can elevate a bar set up.
Makes an average cocktail into something special

  • My parents had a fancy liquor cabinet and at one stage had a bar cart which was very chic in the 70s. I, on the other hand, tend to keep some bottles in the fridge and the rest in the pantry. 😀

  • My mixers always seem to disappear! No matter how big a stock is brought they are not there when I go to mix something up – so I just shop for what I want when I decide I want something and tend to have a drink for a season. We do not drink enough for a fully stocked bar. Great article and agree with the glassware and ice bucket but less so with all the things that are added into the glass.

  • I’d love to be able to afford a bespoke set up like these with every thing at hand. The bar carts especially are really appealing. Having a special corner in the dining room for a bar fridge and all theses natty accessories would be a treat. Beautiful glasses would set it off.

  • My cousin has a home bar anyone would envy. It is literally stocked like a working bar. He loves whisky and has bottles from all over the world. When he finds a new one he hasn’t tried, he buys 2 bottles. 1 to go in his bar to be drunk and the other goes in his collection. Crazy

  • My drinking days have past and my husbands drinking pattern is very limited too. But back in the days I had a good shelf full of a variety of alcoholic drinks. We moved to Australia whilst the rest of our family lives in Europe and we always had big family birthday parties. Here in Australia neither of us has our family nor a wide circle of drinking friends.

  • Loving this article!
I just put a cart in my kitchen but it’s pretty bare at the moment so now I’ve got some great tips.
I realised we have more wine than anything so I’ll need to go shopping and stock up on different mixers and things as well as tools.

  • I can definitely say I’ve got quite a fully stocked alcohol section in my kitchen! You just never know when you want to create something for guests or to accompany a meal. I think bar carts can look so chic and elegant when done right but i hate the idea of the dust collecting on them too
