Time to raise a glass! A classic South Australian shiraz has stolen the spotlight, taking home four major awards and cementing our reputation for world-class reds.
Beresford Estate’s Classic Shiraz 2023 has been named the world’s top Shiraz at the 2026 International Wine Challenge (IWC), receiving 97 points, a Gold Medal, and four major Trophies:
- International Syrah Trophy
- Australian Red Trophy
- Australian Shiraz Trophy
- South Australian Shiraz Trophy

The result places Beresford’s Classic Shiraz at No.1 out of 111 Shiraz entries in the 2026 competition, while also making it the highest-scoring Australian Trophy winner across the entire event. Beresford was one of only ten Australian producers awarded a Trophy this year.
The achievement is made even more notable by the company it kept. Other Australian Trophy winners this year included Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, Tolpuddle Chardonnay 2024, House of Arras Grand Vintage 2017, and Stefano Lubiana Estate Pinot Noir 2024.
“This result is a genuine reflection of what McLaren Vale is capable of. When you let the fruit and site do the talking – without overcomplicating the winemaking – the quality speaks for itself. To be recognised on a global stage against wines at every price point is incredibly rewarding.”
Natalie Cleghorn, Head Winemaker at Beresford Estate
What is the International Wine Challenge?
Now in its fourth decade, the International Wine Challenge is widely regarded as one of the world’s most authoritative wine competitions. Judged by leading international experts through a rigorous blind-tasting process, IWC Trophies represent the pinnacle of global recognition in winemaking – awarded only to wines of exceptional quality, consistency, and regional expression.

Beresford Classic Shiraz 2023
Beresford wines capture the elegance, complexity and unique essence of McLaren Vale. The Classic Shiraz 2023 is the fullest expression of that philosophy: lifted spicy cloves, hints of musky redskin and vanilla bean spice. Well balanced, it delivers great depth, length and structure.
- Bouquet: Perfumed and lifted. Notes of blueberry and plum open the wine, followed by delicate whispers of potpourri. Surprisingly youthful and fresh, even after four years of ageing.
- Palate: Medium body with tangy acidity and fine-grained, firm tannins. Flavours of fresh red cherry, plum and sultana, layered with mint, eucalyptus, dry herbs and the intriguing spice of Chinese five spice.
