If it’s bubbles you want for your next celebration, you’re in the right place! We’ve scoured the country (and beyond) and put the best sparkling wine to buy in Australia in one spot for you!

But first, let’s clear up the most commonly asked question …

Is sparkling wine the same as champagne?

The short answer is no. Although you’re almost guaranteed to hear people in Australia (incorrectly) use the terms sparkling and champagne interchangeably, the fact is that while all champagne is sparkling wine, not all sparkling wine is champagne.

Champagne is a sparkling wine that comes from a north-east region of France called Champagne using very old customs and methods. This also explains why champagne usually comes with quite a high price tag.

Sparkling wine, on the other hand, is created all over the world using a wide range of grapes and methods. For this reason, it’s a considerably more accessible and affordable bubble-filled bevvy.

Bubbling over with apple notes, this blend of chardonnay and pinot noir is a firm favourite when it comes to Australian sparkling wines. At less than $30, it’s a popular mid-range option that doesn’t break the bank and it’s great for all kinds of special occasions. It comes from Oakridge in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and it certainly lives up to the region’s reputation for excellent bubbles.

  • I agree! GJ is really nice and the bottle stopper is a big bonus – especially the rose gold coloured stopper, so pretty. It comes in super handy and holds the bubbles well. A great price too.

  • I really like George Jenson – it tastes so nice and comes with a gorgeous bottle top . I have given this to so many people as gifts and the top means they gave a keepsake

  • I tried the Ovata last night after reading this article a couple of weeks ago – it is really nice and fresh on the pallet! A really good price as well. I usually reach for Bird in Hand Sparkling which I love but the Ovata is a little less sweet and made for a nice change.

  • I tried Grant Burg Pinot Chardonnay over the weekend and it was really nice. For the price it was a great buy. My husband is yet to find the appeal in bubbles but hopefully that will happen soon enough haha

  • I have been looking for something pink to celebrate a friends birthday coming up. The French Sparkling Rose sounds and looks perfect for what I had in mind.

  • Thank you so much! I have been purchasing the same sparkling pinot for over 10 years. I do love it but I feel that it is time for a change. This article has made my new choice a little easier with now wanting to try the Ovata as apple notes sound divine and perfect for summer sips…..and the bottle looks extremely elegant and something I would be most comfortable in brining along to a dinner party.

  • I will be heading to Dan Murphys tomorrow and buying one of these sparklings you recommended, I’m thinking the Ovata because the bottle looks very opulent, to celebrate my husband completing all his requirements in his speciality. Very thankful to have read this article previously and coming back so I know what to get. And an achievement this huge might be a reason to try more than one! Haha

  • Sparkling wine just screams fun to me. The Ovata and Fleurs de Prairie look beautiful. I’ll have to keep them on my list to consider for Christmas and holiday celebrations in the next few months.

  • I prefer a sparkling wine generally over a flat or red wine. The bubbles really add a nice flavour and I know I’d be shot for this but I like ice with it. Really chilled sparkling is really refreshing.

  • The Ovata Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV sounds like a very nice drop. I’m surprised it sells for such a reasonable price. Can’t wait to give it a try.

  • The Fleurs de Prairie French Sparkling Rosé looks so upmarket and yet it’s only $12 a bottle. I’ll be stocking up on this for the holidays.

  • Sparkling wine is what we usually go for, unless it’s a *huge* celebration that calls for a bottle of French bubbles. I’ve had some really lovely sparkling wines. I really like the look of these options, and the prices are excellent!
